Tourist accommodation revenue rose more than 12%
Total revenue from tourist accommodation rose by 12.2% year-on-year in May to €2.08 billion, Statistics Portugal (INE) announced on Monday.
Between January and May, there were 11.3 million guests and 27.7 million overnight stays in Portugal, equivalent to respective increases of 5.3% and 4.4% compared to the same period in 2023.
The average stay in Portugal was 2.45 nights, 0.9% less than a year earlier.
In the first five months of the year, overnight stays from non-residents grew by 5.9%, five percentage points more than those from residents (0.9%), which showed a more modest increase.
In May alone, there was a total income from tourist accommodation of 660.8 million euros, up 15.5%, the same variation recorded by revenue from accommodation, which totalled €505.9 million.
The increase in revenue from tourist accommodation in May was part of a context of increases in both the number of guests (3.1 million, up 9.4%) and the number of overnight stays (7.7 million, up 7.5%).
In May, the municipality of Lisbon accounted for 19.8% of total overnight stays (10.2% of total residents and 22.9% of non-residents), while the municipality of Albufeira also stood out (10.7 % of total overnight stays), after a 13.4% drop in the previous month, resumed its growth by advancing 3.3 %.
Albufeira also recorded the “most significant increase in overnight stays from residents (+14.3%), among the municipalities with the greatest representativeness, while overnight stays from non-residents recorded a more modest growth (+1.8%)”.
In the month under review, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) stood at €78.3 (+12.%) and the average revenue per occupied room (ADR) totalled €123.0 (+9.4%).
The ADR reached its highest values in Greater Lisbon (€171.4) and in the North (€118.8), “with both regions reaching new historical highs in this indicator.
